Typical windmill on Mallorca

It may not be an architectural beauty, but Mallorca’s second largest city is always pulsating with life. Manacor has been known all over the world since 1890 for the artificial pearl manufacturing industry booming here.

A Town with a Personality

Manacor is located approximately 47 km east of Palma; it has about 40,000 inhabitants and is known for its manpower. The city is home to the pearl manufacturing industry, as well as to many furniture factories that produce Mallorcan-style pieces, and to many small workshops that deal in ceramics and small sculptures of olive wood. More than 600 people work for the pearl industry of Manacor, the manufacturers having branches in the USA and France. And yet, Manacor is also an agricultural center of the region, with its vast grain fields and olive groves, and many fig and almond tree plantations.

Cathedral in Manacor

Manacor has a beautiful old town with pretty pedestrian streets. The lavish, neo-Gothic church of Senyora dels Dolors is particulary striking, thanks to its 84-meter high bell tower. This is actually the tallest building in Mallorca, higher even than the Cathedral in Palma – and therefore the pride of all the citizens of Manacor. The Rosary chapel of the monastery church San Vicente Ferrer, dating back to 1576, is one of the most beautiful chapels of the island. The Dominican monastery also has a wonderful baroque cloister with an idyllic ambience. The Archaeological Museum of Manacor displays archaeological finds from the late Roman period – especially noteworthy being a large floor mosaic. Just next to the main road between Manacor and Palma you can visit the quaint windmill Molí d'en Polit, which has stood there since the 19th century. On Monday mornings, Plaça Ramon Llull hosts the weekly market in Manacor, but, if you need anything during any other day, there is a fruit and vegetable market every weekday morning in Plaça Constitució.
